Kennedy's Story

This holiday season, lets give Kennedy a reason to be thankful! This girl deserves to finally have her forever home for the holidays! This week, we will be showcasing Kennedy every day - please share far and wide so her family can finally find her!

Kennedy has been with us since July 2016; and while she has made huge improvements in coming out of her shell and letting her personality shine through, she is sadly still looking for a home of her very own. Her "brothers" were lucky enough to find a home together with one of the rescuers responsible for bringing them to safety, but poor Kennedy is still awaiting that special day where she finally has a family that will see how truly special she is.

Kennedy is a star running partner and will help keep you motivated! She has excellent endurance and really excels at this; she can go for miles! She loves bones, toys, peanut butter, and her all-time favorite glove (yes, her favorite "toy" is a gardening glove lol). She can sometimes be a counter cruiser, and loves to steal things like spaghetti squash, bread, avocados ๐Ÿ˜‚ girl loves her food! She really excels at cuddling and her favorite pastime is to veg on the couch watching TV with her human. She does an awesome morning happy dance to greet you every morning! What could start your day better than someone being SO excited to see yoy first thing in the morning?! She is fiercely loving and loyal when she bonds with a human. If she were an emoji, this would be her ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ When she bonds, its on a deep and soulful level.

Kennedy would love a quiet adult-only home that is understanding of her needs and limitations, and gives her the space and time to figure things out on her own. She is not an "insta-dog", and it takes a while for her to build a trusting, loving relationship with people; her ideal family will need to understand that she will likely regress initially upon adoption (Rome wasn't built in a day!), but with time and patience... She will truly amaze you! She would need a fenced in yard, as occasionally she can be a flight risk when spooked or startled. Kennedy would need a confident, stable dog in the home to help show her the ropes and provide her with the confidence to just "be a dog". She generally does well with most other dogs (she's been exposed to lots!), if she doesn't want to be their friend, she practices avoidance beautifully. Kennedy is mostly house-trained, although she may have an accident if she's under stress or gets in a "funk". She is crate-trained and will now willingly (if not begrudgingly) go in on her own. She seems to prefer females, but eventually warms up to men, although it will likely longer for her to show her true self to the men of the house. She is not entirely comfortable in new situations, and would love her family to expose her to new things, but not PUSH her into them. She is most comfortable in her "safe zone" (home), but has been a real trooper about her outings!

Kennedy came to Ohio from a high-kill shelter in NY 16 months ago (July '16), where she and her "brothers" were picked up as strays (even though she was microchipped to the person that called them in). All three were completely shut down, and didnt seem to have the first clue of how to "dog". They have all made great strides over the past year and a half; even with all of the obstacles they've had to overcome. Kennedy has dealt with some anxiety, fearfulness, and she also had two masses that had to be removed (thankfully they weren't cancer!), as well as an incident where she ripped her dew claw off (ouch!). She has been through so much already and really deserves to finally have a family of her very own.

Visual breed identification of dogs is unreliable and generally inaccurate. For most of our adoptable dogs, we are only taking a guess at predominant breed or breed mixture. We focus on getting to know each dog as an individual and do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label.
